I tend to think that the latter is more likely since the exact same thing also happens on my PC where I also changed from Windows Defender to Malwarebytes Premium. Since the HD/SSD has been erased, that either means that some malware still is on my laptop (in the boot sector for example) or that Microsoft Safety Scanner now produces false positives (maybe because it mistakes the newly added Malwarebytes Premium for an attack on Windows Defender). However, since I changed to Malwarebytes Premium, Microsoft Safety Scanner keeps detecting and deleting the following thing: "VirTool:Win32/DefenderTamperingRestore". I now use Malwarebytes Premium on my laptop in order to increase safety. Since I didn't have any important data on it (I only use it en route), I erased the HD/SSD and reinstalled Windows 10 from a bootstick (or rather had someone do it who's more tech-savvy than I am).
